New rules governing the number of mobile connections a person can hold have taken effect, with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) directing telecom operators to prevent customers from obtaining connections beyond the prescribed limit. 📱🚨
Under the rules, an individual can hold up to nine mobile connections across telecom operators and licensed service areas in India. The limit is six connections in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and the North-East, including Manipur.
Initially, telecom operators will conduct checks on a post-facto basis and immediately suspend any connection found to exceed the applicable limit. DoT has directed operators to introduce real-time verification by November 30, 2026.
The department will also make representative images of subscribers who have reached the maximum limit available through its Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP), which operators must check daily.
Customers will also be required to declare existing mobile connections in their name while applying for a new SIM.
