The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has called on the State Government to ensure the resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in their respective homes before proceeding with the Sangai Festival.

Speaking at a press conference at COCOMI’s office in Lamphel on Tuesday, Moreh IDP representative Thangjam Uttam Meitei said the government should prioritise the return and rehabilitation of displaced people who continue to live in relief camps.

Uttam said many IDPs have been living away from their homes for nearly four years following the conflict and are facing difficulties while depending on limited government assistance.

He questioned the continuation of the situation while preparations are being made for a major State festival, saying public resources should instead prioritise the safe return and rehabilitation of displaced families.

Uttam also said that IDPs should not be expected to participate in the Sangai Festival while they remain displaced from their homes.

According to him, displaced people are currently surviving on government assistance of around ₹100 per day, and he questioned how such conditions could continue nearly four years after their displacement.

“After nearly four years, we do not want to continue living this kind of life. We want to return to our own homes,” Uttam said.

COCOMI’s remarks come amid ongoing efforts by the State Government concerning the welfare and resettlement of internally displaced people. Recent government reviews have also included discussions on IDP resettlement status and livelihood support.
